It is finally here. The last Sunday of the fantasy football regular season. What a wild ride it has been, both in general, but also here at The Lateral. We could not have picked a crazier season to unleash our brand of sideways takes into the blogosphere (the Twitterverse before there was a Twitterverse), so thank you for sticking with us this far. I am sure it will only get crazier from here as 2020 comes to a close.

Week 13 Sunday Preview

Key Player Updates

QB Drew Brees (NO): Brees (OUT, Ribs) is potentially slated to start next week against Philadelphia as his rib injury is improving. Take a look and see if someone in your league dropped him.

QB Lamar Jackson (BAL): Jackson is off the COVID list and is likely into your lineups against the Cowboys this week. Pour one out for anyone who picked up Trace McSorely this week.

QB Cam Newton (NE): Newton (QUESTIONABLE, Abdomen) is expected to play today. Whether or not he will actually be good is another matter. Stay away unless you need a miracle to get into the playoffs, and even then, there are probably better options.

QB Tua Tagovailoa (MIA): Tagovailoa (QUESTIONABLE, Thumb) is expected to play, but remains a game-time decision. The noise you just heard is the collective groan from fantasy managers that needed points from TE Mike Gesicki today.

RB James Conner (PIT): Conner is eligible to come off the COVID list to play against Washington this week, but sources tell Adam Schefter that it should be another week of RB Benny Snell Jr. (PIT).

RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (KC): Edwards-Helaire (QUESTIONABLE, Flu) is a game-time decision, but the Chiefs are hopeful he can play. Monitor this one closely.

RB Todd Gurley II (NO): Gurley (QUESTIONABLE, Knee) is expected to play today. The last time he played the Saints he scored 3.9 points.

RB Carlos Hyde (SEA): Hyde (QUESTIONABLE, Toe) will play today. Still, I expect Chris Carson to be the only fantasy relevant Seahawks RB this week.

RB Philip Lindsay (DEN): Lindsay (QUESTIONABLE, Knee) is expected to play, but will be back in his traditional role of Melvin Gordon-killer, rather than remaining the Broncos starting QB.

WR Julio Jones (ATL): Jones (QUESTIONABLE, Hamstring) is expected to play today. Start 'em if you got 'em.

WR Allen Robinson II (CHI): Robinson (QUESTIONABLE, Knee) is expected to play. The over/under for the number of times he gets mad at QB Mitchell Trubisky is currently set at 3.5.

WR Jerry Jeudy (DEN): Jeudy (QUESTIONABLE, Ankle) is expected to play. Probably a risky play against the Chiefs despite the talent given the QB situation in Denver. Trusting Drew Lock to get you a win this week feels too risky.

Top Waiver Players Available

Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky is a popular choice and was Charles' boom pick for this week. I am not as hyped on Trubisky as most given that he struggles to remain an NFL starter, but Detroit has been a good matchup for him as recently as Week 1 of this season. Personally, I am rolling with Vikings QB Kirk Cousins, who was our waiver recommendation at the beginning of the week. Unfortunately for fantasy managers, it seems Tua Tagovailoa is starting for the Dolphins this week, so Ryan Fitzpatrick is a no-go, but if you could not find Trubisky or Cousins in your league, Jaguars QB Mike Glennon is a solid dart throw against Minnesota. He is also my boom pick this week.

Running Back

Jets RB Frank Gore is the obvious volume play this week with La'Mical Perine still on IR. He was my waiver recommendation this week, and while the upside is not high, the floor is very high compared to the other options. Aside from Gore, your best options are Bills RB Zack Moss and Lions RB Adrian Peterson. Moss is the more likely of the two Bills RBs to fall into the end zone, but if he fails to do that you are S.O.L. Peterson is in line for an expanded role again this week with D'Andre Swift pretty clearly not 100% healthy yet, but he plays the Bears, so that expanded role probably will not produce a high return on investment. The other desperation play is Washington RB J.D. McKissic, who is hovering around 50% availability and could see expanded work in what I expect will be a down week for fellow RB Antonio Gibson. Outside of Gore though, these are all hail mary plays.

Wide Receiver

Jets WR Denzel Mims is available in approximately 90% of Yahoo and ESPN leagues. That is the sole recommendation at WR this week from The Lateral. If he is not available in your league, contact Charles or me on Twitter and we will help you find someone else.

Tight End

Vikings TE Irv Smith Jr. is out again this week, so fire up fellow TE Kyle Rudolph against the Jags. They allow a ton of points to TEs. If Rudolph is not available, Charles loves Titans TE Anthony Firsker this week with Jonnu Smith out, and I have been recommending Colts TE Trey Burton most of the week. Niners TE Jordan Reed also sees a solid target floor when healthy (which he is), and has an excellent matchup against Buffalo. These guys could all have 10+ points this week... or combine for 10 points total. That is what the TE position has been this year.

Defense/Special Teams

Charles likes the Atlanta Falcons DST this week as a boom play against the Saints, and while the logic checks out I feel like we have been here before. My boom pick this week was the San Francisco 49ers, and they are still widely available. They have played well lately, and I think they will do well obviously, but it needs to be said that there is always the risk Bills QB Josh Allen and his talent WR group just torch my boys. Finally, the Las Vegas Raiders play the New York Jets this week, which tends to be a matchup that pays off. Only the New England Patriots in Week 9 failed to finish as a top-12 DST against the Jets. On the other hand, the Raiders are currently DST30 and scoring only 2.8 PPG. So take that information however you see fit.

In this week's waiver wire article, Charles recommended Seahawks K Jason Myers, and I recommended Rams K Matt Gay, who was also my boom pick this week. Both are widely available.
