The Lateral Editor
This is a bittersweet introduction. This week's waiver wire column will actually be the last waiver wire article that The Lateral will have this season.
Ultimately, as Herms and I start producing content for other outlets, we need to work smarter not harder when it comes to The Lateral. But the good news is, I (McLateral) will be joining Herms full-time for the weekly waiver wire podcast that he does for The Lateral (check out this week's episode here). Stay tuned for that dropping every Tuesday for our latest fantasy football waiver wire recommendations.
So, one last time, into the breach my friends.
Diving Into Week 5 Waivers
Diving Into Week 5 Waivers
The Pool: Taylor Heinicke (Washington Football Team), Trey Lance (San Francisco 49ers), Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons)
Herms Pick: Taylor Heinicke (Washington Football Team) [10% ESPN/10%Yahoo]
McLateral Pick: Trey Lance (San Francisco 49ers) [19% ESPN/31% Yahoo]
Trey Lance was QB13 last week. From half a game. Rushing upside is crucial at the quarterback position in fantasy football, and Lance has a ton. With Jimmy Garoppolo out for a couple of weeks, he is guaranteed to get at least a start. Regardless, it does not matter if you only get a game out of Lance. There is a real chance that Lance will win you that game.
The Obvious Add: Sam Darnold (Carolina Panthers) [18% ESPN/38% Yahoo]
Running Back (PPR)
The Pool: Kenneth Gainwell (Philadelphia Eagles), Alex Collins (Seattle Seahawks), Jeremy McNichols (Tennessee Titans), Khalil Herbert (Chicago Bears), Brandon Bolden (New England Patriots), Samaje Perine (Cincinnati Bengals)
Herms Pick: Kenneth Gainwell (Philadelphia Eagles) [25% ESPN/29% Yahoo]
McLateral Pick: Kenneth Gainwell (Philadelphia Eagles) [25% ESPN/29% Yahoo]
I actually recommended that people pick up Kenneth Gainwell all the way back in Week 2. Pretty much all the reasons I laid out there still hold true, and it seems they will continue to hold true as long as Nick Sirianni is the Philadelphia Eagles head coach. Go get him now before it is too late.
The Obvious Adds: Damien Williams (Chicago Bears) [10% ESPN/9% Yahoo], J.D. McKissic (Washington Football Team) [49% ESPN/39% Yahoo]
Wide Receiver (PPR)
The Pool: Van Jefferson (Los Angeles Rams), Kalif Raymond (Detroit Lions), Randall Cobb (Green Bay Packers), Jamison Crowder (New York Jets), A.J. Green (Arizona Cardinals)
Herms Pick: Van Jefferson (Los Angeles Rams) [5% ESPN/5% Yahoo]
McLateral Pick: A.J. Green (Arizona Cardinals) [27% ESPN/24% Yahoo]
Targets are such a key indicator for success, and the targets for A.J. Green have been incredibly consistent. How consistent, you ask? Well, currently, Green is averaging six targets per game, because he has literally seen six targets every single game. Which is the reason that Green has been a top-36 fantasy football wide receiver in point-per-reception (PPR) leagues. Green has particularly been hot the past two weeks, with 17.0 PPR fantasy football points per game due to an 83.3% catch rate. As long as he keeps catching the targets he has been seeing, he will continue to be relevant for fantasy football.
The Obvious Adds: Darnell Mooney (Chicago Bears) [38% ESPN/41% Yahoo], Hunter Renfrow (Las Vegas Raiders) [47% ESPN/27% Yahoo]
Tight End (PPR)
The Pool: Dawson Knox (Buffalo Bills), Mo-Alie Cox (Indianapolis Colts), Maxx Williams (Arizona Cardinals), Zach Ertz (Philadelphia Eagles)
Herms Pick: Dawson Knox (Buffalo Bills) [20% ESPN/47% Yahoo]
McLateral Pick: Zach Ertz (Philadelphia Eagles) [26% ESPN/16% Yahoo]
Zach Ertz, not Dallas Goedert, is the leader in targets for the Philadelphia Eagles this season. For the record, Dawson Knox is actually my pick here, but since Herms picked him I decided to offer an alternative. As long as quarterback Jalen Hurts continues to lean on his tight ends, Ertz will be a borderline top-12 fantasy football tight end. Fun fact: Ertz was TE5 in PPR fantasy football leagues over the past two weeks.
The Obvious Add: Dalton Schultz (Dallas Cowboys) [22% ESPN/34% Yahoo]
The Pool: Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers
Herms Pick: Minnesota Vikings [17.5% ESPN/18% Yahoo]
For more on Herms's take, go check out "The Lateral Show: 2021 Week 5 Waiver Wire" McLateral Pick: Dallas Cowboys [32.3% ESPN/23% Yahoo]
The Dallas Cowboys are actually a top-5 defense/special teams (DST) unit so far this season. A big part of that is due to their 10 takeaways being second in the NFL. They actually lead the league in interceptions. In Week 5 they get the New York Giants and should be able to add to those 10 takeaways against Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.
The Obvious Add: None
The Pool: Randy Bullock (Tennessee Titans), Rodrigo Blankenship (Indianapolis Colts)
Herms Pick: N/A
Herms did not make a pick, but you should still go check out "The Lateral Show: 2021 Week 5 Waiver Wire"
McLateral Pick: Randy Bullock (Tennessee Titans) [1% ESPN/1% Yahoo]
In my "A Week Too Early Waiver Wire" column, I actually picked New England Patriots kicker Nick Folk for this week. But since he feels like an obvious addition, I am instead going to pick the guy I suggested for Week 4, Tennessee Titans kicker Randy Bullock. Bullock finished top-six at the position against the New York Jets this past Sunday, and Week 5 against the Jacksonville Jaguars feels primed for a repeat performance.
The Obvious Add: Matt Prater (Arizona Cardinals) [36% ESPN/50% Yahoo], Nick Folk (New England Patriots) [9% ESPN/11% Yahoo]
